Even though Jody has only been with MYCS for two years, she already feels at home with the MR Residential program. This particular program provides mentally retarded citizens and individuals with their own homes. For Jody, an active and lively woman, the program has helped her develop independence that comes from maintaining a regular schedule in her own space. Her counselor and supervisor, Amy, credits Jody for adapting well to independent living, and also for her courageous and friendly spirit.
“Jody is very friendly and well-liked. I admire her because she has experienced tragedy and hardship, yet never loses her positive outlook,” Amy says. The unexpected and tragic loss of her mother in 2001 was the starting point of Jody’s hardships. Jody was living far from resources necessary for everyday living such as banks and grocery stores. She struggled in her stepfather’s house despite the support of Jody’s large extended family. The death of her mother left a void in Jody’s life that she struggled with for three years before coming to Mon Yough.
In 2004 Jody was given a home with a roommate near MYCS. By establishing a routine and taking part in community activities, Jody found happiness and friendship. Now Jody can walk and get coffee with friends, or buy whatever she needs right down the street from her house. “She has adapted so well. It’s truly amazing,” Amy says. Three days a week, Jody goes to Angora Gardens in White Oak Park to help maintain the historic property. She enjoys helping tend the garden and care for the bunnies. “Volunteering is a big part of Jody’s life. She loves helping people,”
With outside programs like Exceptional Adventures, Jody and her peers take vacations and day-trips to amusement parks, shows and seasonal destinations. She also enjoys cooking, watching soap operas, singing, dancing, and puzzle books. “She keeps herself busy and continues to socially develop and adapt,” says Amy. “Her story is definitely a success.”
